Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex, chronic disease that can be attributed to the interaction of numerous biological, behavioural and social components in a person’s life. Similar to how mental illness is mistakenly viewed as an individual problem, substance use challenges are as well. Every individual responds to treatment differently and it is important they know that there are different options available for them if the first doesn’t work; it is equally important for them to know that health professionals and their loved ones will not give up on them in this scenario.
